When Ashley and Patrick arrived at the softball field for their family session with their daughter Lucy (and their blue heeler, Cookie!), they were excited — but a little nervous. This was their very first set of family portraits.
Lucy, at just 2 years old, wasn’t quite ready to jump into all the “fun” ideas I had in mind. In the first photo, you can see the moment we asked if she wanted to swing between her parents - and her face says it all. In the second photo, she tucked her arms behind her back, holding herself close and hiding her arms. Totally normal, and completely okay.
Instead of pushing, I slowed things down. I got on her level, chatted with her, let her peek at the back of my camera, and even pulled out a squeaky toy (that later went home with her!). We may have also called on Ms. Rachel for backup — and yes, I might have fibbed a little and told Lucy I was friends with Ms. Rachel to win her trust.
By the end, you can see how much she had opened up. That last photo is pure joy - giggles, running, and her personality shining through. Cookie brought her own personality too, laser-focused on her ball while I blew bird whistles hard just to get her attention! It was hilarious and so true to this family’s life together.
This is why I believe in child-led sessions. Every child warms up differently, and my role isn’t to force a smile - it’s to create the space where real connection and joy can naturally unfold. Parents often tell me I have “so much patience,” and I think that comes from my background in early childhood education and how much I absolutely adore working with kids. I know little ones thrive when we follow their lead, give them space, and let them set the pace.
And here’s a little behind-the-scenes secret: Lucy spilled on her dress on the way to the session (mom’s face when she pulled her out of the car seat said it all!). But as you’ll see in next week’s blog, editing magic means spills don’t take away from the final portraits.
So, if you’ve been worried about whether your shy toddler or energetic pup will “cooperate” during photos, take a breath. I’ve got you. Sessions with me are easy, fun, and full of patience.
